 THE SCHOOL OF BASIC MEDICINE ZHONGJING SCHOOL

The School of Basic Medicine was established in July 2002 on the basis of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine founded in 1958. It got the present name School of Basic Medicine (Zhongjing School) in November 2017.

As a teaching and research center the School undertakes the teaching and experiments of 110 courses including various basic courses of Chinese Medicine, Western Medicine and preventive medicine at all levels. The school has a staff of 163 including 18 professors, 46 associate professors (senior laboratory technician), 68 PH.D, 78 Master’s, 15 doctoral tutors, and 65 Master’s tutors. The School consists of 16 disciplines/departments, including 5 state-level key disciplines, 1 provincial-level discipline and 9 sub-discipline. The School has 1 provincial-level medical experiment center for teaching demonstration, 1 provincial-level virtual simulation experiment center, and 2 provincial-level research laboratories. It has 3 provincial-level outstanding teaching teams and 1 excellent grassroots teaching organization, 1 provincial-level science and technology innovation team, and 1 university-level science and technology innovation team. There are 1 postdoctoral research station of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 5 secondary subjects for doctorate, 10 secondary subjects for master’s with 122 postgraduates, and 651 undergraduate students majoring in Chinese Medicine (Zhongjing academic inheritance class) and preventive medicine.

The School of Basic Medicine has formed a complete education system integrating teaching and research with distinctive features and advantages in the training of Chinese Medicine and preventive medicine professionals.

 

INTRODUCTION TO THE SPECIALTIES OF SCHOOL OF BASIC MEDICINE (ZHONGJING SCHOOL)

The School of Basic Medicine (Zhongjing School) offers 2 undergraduate programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Zhongjing Inheritance Class) and Preventive Medicine.

In order to develop a training mode featuring "traditional Chinese medicine, the Central Plains, and Zhang Zhongjing", Traditional Chinese Medicine (Zhongjing Inheritance Class) was set up. Focusing on traditional Chinese culture, Classics of traditional Chinese medicine, clinical practices, TCM way of thinking and academic inheritance of Zhongjing, innovated course system has been applied, including mini class teaching, discussion, PBL and other advanced learning methods. A training mode has been established combining college education, apprentice education and academic genres. The comparative study of TCM inheritance model and the model of college education has won the Teaching Achievement Award of Henan. After nine years of practice, this class has achieved initial success. The students' professional and humanistic quality is generally appreciated. The rate of students pursuing postgraduate studies and employment rate top the list in the university. At present, there are 196 undergraduate students.

Preventive medicine is closely interrelated with social needs and the real life practices. The School aims to train professionals with lifelong learning skills, critical thinking and innovative abilities by integrating professional education with competence education, theories and practices. In order to meet the needs of social preventive medicine services, the students are trained to be adaptive and innovative. A complete training system has been established which incorporates modern preventive medicine into Traditional Chinese Medicine, modern alimentology into Chinese dietary theory. The quality of education has been improving steadily, with a growing number of graduates admitted by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Zhongshan University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, and China Disease Prevention and Control Center, the Academy of Military Medical Sciences. Professional competence and research ability of the graduates have won general acknowledgement. Since 2004, preventive medicine has developed into a characteristic and pilot comprehensive reform specialty at provincial level. Currently, there are 452 undergraduate students.
