The School of Acupuncture & Tuina with fifty-year history was founded successively out of previous Acupuncture Teaching and Research Section and the Acupuncture & Tuina Department. It was among the first that were entitled to confer the Master’s Degree of Medical Science in 1979. It was also authorized by the Ministry of Education as the demonstration major in the teaching reform of higher professional education in 2001. Since 2002, it has been appraised the key sbuject of Henan Province three times in succession. It was nominated the Advanced Basic-level Party Organization by Henan Provincial Committee of CPC in 2003. The School of Acupuncture & Tuina began the major of co-cultivating doctors in 2004 and became the base for continuing education of Henan TCM. In 2007, it was entitled the key subject in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Presently, the School undertakes the teaching tasks on acupuncture, basics of acupuncture, acupuncture clinic, acupuncture therapeutics, acupuncture experiment, acupuncture & tuina and neurophysiology. All the staff are all responsible, getting outstanding teaching effects and students’ high praise.
In 1999, with the notion of School-hospital cooperation, the School of Acupuncture & Tuina and the Third Affiliated Hospital united into a comprehensive second-level school featuring in teaching, medical service, and research. Presently it has 33 staff, including 7 professors, 7 associate professors, 8 doctors and 15 postgraduates, among them 1 with post-doctorate, 1 doctoral tutor, 1 academic leader on provincial level, and 14 Key Teachers on provincial and departmental level and tutors directed by the nationally celebrated Chinese medicine physicians.
Up till now, it has undertaken altogether 35 research projects, of which 2 projects in the program sponsored by the State Natural Sciences Foundation of China, 1 Key Project in the National Science & Technology Pillar Program during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period (sub-project), 1 project specializing in science during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period, 1 project in Acupuncture Clinical Operative Technique Standardization Research (sub-project), and 9 projects in the Collection of Clinical Treatmental Technology Program of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the past two years, 170 papers, as well as 34 volumes, have been published in the journals on state or provincial level. It has also participated in the compilation of many state-planed coursebooks.
For three years, it has hold 3 nationwide academic conferences, 4 conferences on teaching materials, and 3 clinical conference and training classes, and it has also conducted 15-term training class for massagists and sent 46 staffs to participate in the international and national academic conferences.
Acupuncture and Tuina play the leading role in the process of Traditional Chinese Medicine getting known to the world, especially on the aspects of international cooperation and foreign exchanges. The School of Acupuncture & Tuina, as the window of Henan University of TCM to the outworld, plays a more and more significant role. In recent years, many staff in the School have been sent to countries such as South Korea, Britain, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Zambia, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and so on to make academic exchanges, obtaining great success.
