An Introduction to the Third Clinical Medical School, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, the Third Affiliated Hospital

 

The Third Clinical Medicial School, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, The Third Affiliated Hospital Henan University of Chinese Medicine was developed out of the Teaching and Research Section of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in 1958. It began to offer Master’s programs in 1979, being one of first batch of colleges to recruit postgraduate candidates for Chinese medicine in China. Founded in 1984, the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was merged with The Third Affiliated Hospital in 1999. It aims to cultivate talents in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina, combining medical treatment and teaching.

Since 2000the discipline of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina has been selected as provincial key discipline for 3 consecutive years, The school has been running doctoral programs jointly with other institutions. In 2005, it was accredited as the base for TCM continuing education under Henan Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2009, it was accredited as specialty-construction unit by the Ministry of Education. The teaching team of acupuncture and moxibustion won provincial awards and the course of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was enlisted in the provincial bilingual demonstration classes. In 2012, it was selected as key discipline construction unit of “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” set by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Henan Shao’s inheritance studio of acupuncture and moxibustion is the first batch of inheritance studio of TCM academic schools. The inheritance studio of acupuncture manipulation an intangible cultural heritage was also set up.

In 2014, the school began to enroll doctorate candidates for acupuncture and moxibustion. The specialty of acupuncture and moxibustion is one of the feature specialties in Henan. As the origin of TCM culture, Henan province holds acupuncture and moxibustion as one of the important means for international exchanges and cooperation. In recent years, teachers have been sent to foreign countries and regions, such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia, South Korea, Switzerland, for academic and medical exchanges with great success. Over a thousand of foreign students have come to study from dozens of countries and regions.

As a comprehensive first-class hospital of TCM, integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, disease prevention, health care, rehabilitation, and a standardized national-level training base for residents, the hospital houses 28 clinical departments, 24 inpatient wards, 9 medical laboratories and 1000 beds. There are 2 key disciplines and 3 key TCM construction units approved by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 key specialties of Henan province, 3 key TCM construction units of Henan province. The hospital boasts 1 “National TCM Master”, 6 experts who are awarded special allowance by the State Council, 19 famous old national TCM experts, 8 staff members who have won the Lifetime Career Achievement Award, 7 famous TCM doctors in Henan province, 9 inheritance studios of famous old national TCM experts, 1 studio of intangible cultural heritage on acupuncture and moxibustion manipulation, Shao’s inheritance studio of acupuncture and moxibustion. Besides, the hospital has set up 5 inpatient wards in the department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Tuina, Pain Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Rheumatology. All the above has contributed to the development of the discipline of Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Tuina.

The Third Clinical Medical School, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of Chinese Medicine is a comprehensive subordinate school integrating teaching, medical treatment, and scientific research. Its multi-level teaching system offers postdoctoral, doctoral, Master’s undergraduate programs in acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina. It also offers advancement from junior college level to undergraduate level, and junior college program as well. The school mainly undertakes teaching of 18 courses, such as, Meridians and Acupoints, Manipulations of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Clinical Study on Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Acupuncture and Moxibustion Therapeutics, Basics of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, The Excerpts from Acupuncture and Moxibustion Classics, Various Theories of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Acupuncture and Moxibustion and Tuina, Experimental Acupuncture and Moxibustion, On Tuina Manipulation, Tuina Therapeutics, Practice of Tuina, Science of Qigong of TCM, Pediatric Tuina, Cerebral Internal Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, Gynecology of Chinese Medicine, Diagnostics of Western Medicine. It has an excellent teaching team specialized in medicine, teaching and scientific research. Currently the school has 1067 staff members, among which 197 are teachers, including 36 professors, 52 associate professors, 75 lecturers, 28 teaching assistants. More than 86.1% of the teachers have got Master’s or doctoral degrees.

Currently, the school has 10 disciplines: Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Tuina, Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Orthopedics and Traumatology of Chinese Medicine, Gynaecology of Chinese Medicine, Surgery of Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation of Chinese Medicine, Medical Imaging Technology, Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology of Chinese Medicine, Diagnostics of Western Medicine. The discipline of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina has been selected as provincial key discipline for 3 consecutive years since 2000. The school has been running doctoral programs jointly with other institutions. In 2005, it was accredited as the base for TCM continuing education under Henan Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was accredited as provincial featured specialty in 2008 and accredited as specialty-construction unit by the Ministry of Education in 2009. In 2011, the teaching team of acupuncture and moxibustion won provincial awards and the course of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was enlisted in the provincial bilingual demonstration classes. In 2012, it was selected as key discipline construction unit of “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” set by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the same year, “Henan Shao’s inheritance studio of acupuncture and moxibustion” was set up after approved by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, among the first batch of TCM academic inheritance studios. Meanwhile, an inheritance studio of acupuncture manipulation an intangible cultural heritage was also established with Professor Zhang Jin as the representative inheritor and academic leader. In 2014, the school began to enroll doctorate candidates for acupuncture and moxibustion. The School is the training base for senior talents in acupuncture and moxibustion.
